News stories hammer:
Saturated with sorrow,
my mind feels broken
Painful images
jingle jangle sore senses,
depression descends
Desensitized brains
must fight to reignite hope,
empathy and peace
A reflection on the daily news

I reckon you are most definitely not alone in feeling this way. The news is something that is approached these days with more than a hint of trepidation. And I tend to agree that there can develop the desentizing to which your poem refers. I agree with what your poem says after that in that we cannot continue to be that way, we must expose ourselves to the news and fight for what is right. And at the forefront of that fight is poetry. I like the alliteration in your second verse.

You are welcome.

Rachel, I just read Rachelle's comments and I agree, totally with what she said about you. Also, I just love her first line to you :) I don't have her tenacity, but I have written letters to certain members of Congress and our mayor. I seriously doubt they ever saw them, much less read them, but I'm trying. The anti- America Americans in this country absolutely infuriate me, and I have to turn the TV off, too. i could go on and on about this, I just hope patriots everywhere will stand and be counted. Best of luck to us all!

Thank you!

Rachel, this is your Jewish Mommie calling. You need a pep talk. You do SOO much good in the world. You're compassionate, you're GENEROUS, you're EXTREMELY selfless. But if you get bogged down by the heaviness of others who are NOT doing the right thing for this world. then we who are trying to make things better lose an important member of our ranks. Don't let "them" do that to us. Keep the focus on your good works and the way you're making a difference in your immediate corner of the world. That is all anyone can do. But if everyone who cares does that, then the world's "good pockets" outnumber the bad ones. Be a bulldozer in your quadrant. I'll do the same in mine, and we'll improve things, one quadrant at a time. We'll start a movement, and eventually, we'll have made an impressive impact. I discovered that not watching or listening to the news was the best thing I ever did for my mental health. It can eat a person alive. It's better to ignore the news and do everything you can in your own part of the world. XOXOXOXOXO
