Keith Altham's Regret

This is an example of a concrete poem. The words are mine. The shape is thanks to my daughter. Keith Altham was a music journalist who wrote for Melody Maker and Sounds. The quotes are all from Jimmy Hendrix who was quite the philosopher. Just in case you cannot read the words in the shape I include the poem.

Keith Altham's Regret

Story image

The last time I saw him play was the Isle of Wight.

Not his best performance but he still lit up the night.

18 days later he would be gone at 27.

He said: "Forget what other people say, craziness is heaven."

I missed the last time he ever picked up a guitar.

Too tired to make it to Ronnie Scott's club and bar.

A musical magpie - blues, jazz and Dylan all went into the mix.

Into his head they went and they all emerged as Hendrix.

For nearly four years I was a part of his entourage.

Uncomplicated, straight talking, no need for camouflage.

He said: "Who are you to judge the life I live, I mean

before you start pointing fingers make sure your hands are clean."

His words live on but the problems they refer to will never cease.

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace."

Bernie, this is Katharine Folkes, judge for this weeks short story post. It is suggested that a post be listed as either general fiction or poetry, but not both. Since the poem is what you're telling about, that should probably be the topic, don't you think? BTW, your daughter did a great job! It is. of course, up to you which you choose.

I have never been confident about submitting as poetry which is what I want to do. It comes up as general fiction when I write it and I don't know how to change it. Sorry.

If you go up to the top of your screen where your picture is, click on it and then on my works, it will take you to a place where you can edit and put poetry instead if general fiction, since the poem is your subject.

The Words That Got to Me

He said: "Who are you to judge the life I live, I mean before you start pointing fingers make sure your hands are clean." Ah - if only people could abide by that.

Kids I taught used to love shape poetry - this would have been a superb addition for the older ones. I loved the mix of Hendrix's words and yours here. Nice to see your work back on here - I really enjoyed this.

Thank you very much Rachel. Yeah Jimmy, when you read about him, was a very shy but very caring person. And he was very much a philosopher.

The Words That Got to Me

The movement in this poem from “The last time I saw him play…” through to “I missed the last time he ever picked up a guitar.” encapsulates the very personal nature of the poem. "A musical magpie…" such an excellent description of Hendrix.

I really enjoyed the personal reminiscence in this poem and the way you have used the words of one of his close associates to help us understand such an iconic musician. The heart of the poem is almost tragic in the way such a simple thing as being tired could then become the reason for missing his last performance. How could he know at the time? And yet, something so mundane became ‘the last time’. The use of the poem's shape was so clever. The way the opening is constrained into that narrow neck, before the poem opens out into the body as Altham moves from remembering Hendrix’s final days into what Hendrix meant and what remains of him. Using the shape of his instrument to shape the regret… Superb.

Thank you very much Tim. The shape is down to my daughter who did it for me. I think there will always be elements of Hendrix wisdom influencing generations. The last quote I use is simple yet very powerful and crosses generations.

The Words That Got to Me

He said: "Forget what other people say, craziness is heaven." *I've got to be better about adopting this philosophy!! A musical magpie - blues, jazz and Dylan all went into the mix. *Bernie, this is simply brilliant. Oh, how I have missed your contributions on here!!!!!! xo before you start pointing fingers make sure your hands are clean." * love it - theme and variation on "Let those who are without sin..."

The essence of this poem is exceptional...but then to form it into the shape of a GUITAR? Honestly, it makes me never want to enter the creative waters again because I am such an amateur. This one blew me away. Thank you for all you added to the site with this. xoxo

Thank you so much Rachelle. You are far from an amateur. I am not having that. Thank you for the line about missing my contributions. Words like that inspire me to write more. I am truly grateful..xoxo
