That Stretchy Thing

a poem

That Stretchy Thing

Until my later years I measured 5 foot six in height

and then it swiftly fell to 5 ft 2,

 it seemed, my spine deteriorated, almost overnight;

and all my pants are now too long, so what I’ve got to do

is take the hems up on them all, but there is something more,

I wear a brace with hinges on my knee,

and that means new, wide "leg-ged" pants would be a bigger chore

because new wide leg pants would also be too long, you see.

I think if I should get on that inverted stretching wrack

which several friends have told me feels so good

to help my suddenly shorter and bad curving, aching back,

if I passed out, still, I think I would.

One major problem that I see in getting one of those

Is I'd need someone to help me get upright,

and so that lets out having one because I live alone

and not a bloomin’ relative in sight.

You’re prob’ly thinking, what the heck, just trundle to a gym

The truth is, that would be my worst nightmare

I’ll just have to be content to being short and curved

and have fun anyway and just not care!
