In the English Language there are words
whose meanings are concise; there is no doubt
that one can count on them to be the truth;
However, there is one I'll talk about.
SLEEP--a peaceful state desired by all
to calm the wretched ups and downs in life,
when finally, the body stretches out,
should not, by any means, cause stress and strife.
"Ha ha!" Sleep says, "You wanta make a bet?
You think that night and I, each give a hoot
if people slumber, peacefully, and dream
or toss and turn and give us both the boot?"
Alas, it seems old sleep is of two minds;
it can tease and taunt and wear us down,
or give us peace to wake up all refreshed,
with a smile instead of with a frown.
If that is true, I think that sleep and I
have passed each other somewhere in the night
and I am left a red-eyed, grouchy hag
who, when I curse at sleep, I have the right!
And then, some helpful soul will say to me,
"There are sleeping aids that you can take."
But that's a habit I don't want to have,
for if it worked, it'd be too hard to break.
And so, each night, just like an eager child
awaits old Santa, I lie there and hope
tonight's the night; relax and close your eyes.
And...here it comes; but does it last long? Nope.
