Love in the Parking Lot

Sam’s Motto:

“There’s meant-ta-bes and mebbe nots and I’ll be danged if I knows

But yer’ll never find out, lest ya have a go and pick up the dice and throws.”

~ ~ ~

A parkin’ lot at the groc’ry store ain’t prob’ly the spot for romance

But most folks figger love’s strange, anyway, so ya might as well give it a chance.

A pick-up truck, this old dude gets out, and he says, “Well, howdy, there, ma’am.”

A double-masked, scrawny old biddy replies, “Aw, git on with you, now, Sam!

Just git out the way, lemme get to my truck; don’tcha get so close to me!

You’re s’posed to be six feet away, anyhow, and you ain’t doin’ that, I can see!

And look, you got no mask on, neither. I could get that Covid, for sure.”

And Sam, to stop her blathering, says, “Okay, ma’am, I’ll doer.”

He pulls his red bandana from his neck up under his eyes.

Old biddy stares real hard at Sam and says, to his surprise,

“Why Sam Magraw, without that shnoz, you clean up pretty good.”

Sam shakes his head ‘cause women, he ain’t never understood.

“I made my special chili today, if you’d like to come over to eat,”

And Sam, his stomach a’growlin’ loud, thought he felt his heart skip a beat.

“There’s corn bread and some cole slaw, too, now, how’s that sound to you?”

Sam said, “Mam, that sounds real good, if it’s okay my shnoz comes too.”

Old biddy, whose given name is Sal, said, “Well, now, that’s jes fine.”

Sam nodded, wonderin’ if he had gone and left his brain behind.

Well, seems old Sam enjoyed himself; best time he ever had,

And Sal? I guess she reckoned that his shnoz warn’t all that bad.

Sam’s New motto…

Here’s what Sam’s been sayin’ since those dice he up and throwed:

“Chili’s all that woman cooks. I wish I woulda knowed.”

The Words That Got to Me

‘A double-masked scrawny old biddy’ made me laugh out loud. I loved the way you painted the two characters here.

Suggestions / Possible Tweaks

Shnoz was an unknown to me.

What’s fabulous, fun character read. I absolutely loved the way you showed the reader how love can blossom in the most unexpected ways.

Thanks, Rachel! I appreciate your kind words! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Now you've got a new word - though I wouldn't swear to the spelling :)
