Quirks

Seems I’m the Kind of Person Who:

…has floaters, and I swat at them,

thinking they are irksome gnats.

I see they’re not, but they still follow

when I’m doing “this and that’s!

…waters plants in leather shoes—

(shoes on me, not on the plants)

And I always get them wet—

Shoes, again; also long pants.

…Hums with famous violinist,

Itzak Perlman, but also

sings country with Toby Keith

and that surely goes to show

I have different tastes—they vary,

which is healthy, which is fun

but, back to poem’s point: my weirdness,

I fear that I am someone

…who likes cream soups and coffee cold,

 left-overs—why heat them up?

They are really good that way,

so why use pots, then have to scrup. (scrub :)

~~~
I’d like a quirk that’s beneficial,
one that actually helps my mind;
brings back knowledge I’ve forgotten,
making words easy to find.
Laughing at one’s self’s a quirk,
and makes me wonder, could there be
 another quirky soul who’d gladly
swat at floaters, ‘long with me?
(or sing with Toby)
(or hum with Itzak – truly,
Beethoven’s violin concerto,
I can hum most of it)
A person without any quirks is a person who will never be in my inner circle. In fact, I think we choose our friends BASED on their quirks. There are quirks we can live with - even admire - and others that would drive us out of our minds. Yours are benign and endearing. No wonder we're friends. xoxo
thanks, Rachelle! I think you're probably right. We'd be pretty boring without 'em. (glad I didn't list them all -ha)
The Words That Got to Me
I love your little (asides). Gentle interruptions that add to the charm and quirkiness. I know people who do exactly that as I talk to them. Almost interrupt themselves mid-flow in order to clarify something that didn't really require it.
Suggestions / Possible Tweaks
"They are really good that way, so why use pots, then have to scrup. (scrub :)" The forced rhyme and correction feels a little more laboured than the rest of the poem.
This is so charmingly eccentric and a celebration of the gentle wacky weirdness that makes a person into a true character. And I do enjoy the way you slowly shift from, look at me, I am rather strange, to more of a surely I am not the only one. Are we not, in the end, pretty odd? And isn't that what makes us humans such fun?
Thanks, Tim!! You can really make a person's effort sound wonderful and we all appreciate you. I know I do!
