A SELF EVIDENT TRUTH

A poem that can be read both ways - top to bottom and bottom to top. Written from a prompt in my writing group.

It's not a self evident truth

I know that's what you always believed but

Your influence on me is not physically there

Still your claws leave their imprints

Somewhere in my soul my memory

A puff of smoke a faded picture

The burden of being the first born

You never wanted to let me go

Even though you're not here any more

I'm still left to analyse everything I do

Is it you coming out in me

How can I ever be certain

I know there must be something of you in me

I lie awake at night and think

Did you speak through me today

Are you controlling me from beyond the grave

Like I'm a conduit for your vicious bile

Has this been me today or have I been

A product of my dysfunctional genes
