The Sideways Race

with a catch

The Sideways Race

As I was walking on the beach,

I heard a big blue crab beseech:

“Say look here, human, wanna race?”

I leaned down to him, face to face.

He laughed a garglie, crabby laugh,

And said, “I think, on your behalf,

A head start I will give to you,

For I will beat you, through and through.”

I laughed then, too, in pure delight

And hunkered down to take my flight.

“Hey, wait!” he said.” You can’t start yet.

There are some rules we need to set.

“To make this fair and square, you see,

You have to run the same as me.”

“What way is that?” I asked, amazed.

He grinned at me and said, “sideways.”

“Okay,” I said. “You’re on, my friend.

Then let this sideways race begin!

The finish line will be the pier -

About 100 yards from here.”

We took off, sideways, down the sand,

Our legs a-going to beat the band.

A seagull stopped and laughed to see

A big blue crab outrunning me.

As up and down I bobbed along,

This sideways business felt all wrong.

My neck began to get a crick,

My tummy—queasy, kinda sick.

And then, as I fell far behind,

A picture formed inside my mind:

I saw, with every wheeze I uttered,

Steamed crabmeat, “lemon-ed” and buttered!

The Words That Got to Me

"As up and down I bobbed along, This sideways business felt all wrong. My neck began to get a crick, My tummy—queasy, kinda sick." This made me chuckle as I imagined the children reading this trying it out for themselves. "I saw, with every wheeze I uttered, Steamed crabmeat, 'lemon-ed' and buttered!" Nom nom ending. Love it.

I love comic verse and here you have made me a corker to enjoy, Katharine. You keep the humour very visual and bouncing along at a steady pace. I love the antics of your roguish crab. Never outstaying its welcome, makes an entrance, give me a grin, then leaves me with a head full of memorable images, and a strange craving to go to my fishmonger and pick up some fresh crab for dinner.

The Words That Got to Me

I loved the lines, And hunkered down to take my flight’ and ‘Bobbed up and down’ - perfect! They conjured up a sense of enthusiasm.

Suggestions / Possible Tweaks

Nothing to report!

I loved the joyous fun of this poem. What a unique idea- I will never view a seaside jaunt in the same way again! Luckily, I don’t eat crab - I would now worry about your pal if I tried.

Thanks so much, Rachel! Your comments are much appreciated.

The Words That Got to Me

He laughed a garglie, crabby laugh, * This phrasing is adorable!!

THIS IS SO FUN!! And my musician's ear enjoyed the PERFECTION of your rhymes and meter. There is not a child who wouldn't love to have this read to him or her. And it would make for such a fabulous illustrated children's book, Katharine...though a bit startling at the end when the narrator is indulging in his crabfest!! Oh, well; too bad, Kids. Let your lesson be: "Don't challenge creatures who can eat you. You'll thank me someday, Susie..."

Hmmm. Maybe I could change the ending and send it to Cricket or Spider mags. They've published some of my stuff in the past. Thanks for your cute, funny comments and for the nifty idea!
