Dark clouds slowly crossed the moon,
and from a nearby lake, a loon
cried soulfully that lonely night,
arousing bats that rose in flight.
They zigged and zagged on leather wings
in search of bugs and other things;
they scared the trick or treaters who
screamed and fled. Well, wouldn’t you?
The witch thought bats were lovely things
With their leather, pointy wings
and FANGS—how wonderful was that!
She loved the scary, scary bat.
The witch had trouble with her broom
for it would sputter, ’stead of ZOOM;
she had to get a new one, soon
to make her flight across the moon.
She went into a hardware store;
and found what she was looking for,
a broom with power to beat the band.
She called her new broom, “Rocket Man.”
To show it off she felt the need,
it’s super power, it’s extra speed
she thought she’d give the thing a test
and flew right through the IRS,
their papers flew around the room
got all mixed up from her new broom
the biggest mess she’d ever seen;
the perfect “trick” on Halloween!
And after that, she felt so fine,
she thought, I’ll call some friends of mine
if they would like to come at nine,
we’ll dine and share some “Hallowine.”

The Words That Got to Me
They zigged and zagged on leather wings in search of bugs and other things; I loved the very visual image here. Leather was a lovely word choice and you described their movement perfectly.
This was a super Halloween poem - bright and fun for the spooky season.
