Ars Poetica

By the Seat of My Brain

Well, when I write, my writing guides the words

which fly in from some wondrous magic place

all ready to impart their heady thoughts,

or not; they race about, in clueless state

to see if they can join and make a plot

and somehow cause the reader to exclaim

how wunderbar, jawohl, der writer iss

und find out, right away, der writer’s name!

Hahahaha. That is a multi-functioning brain there! Sometimes it creates in German, sometimes in English...but always with humor and pluck. I'm sure Tim is very proud of your first-ever Ars Poetica!! xoxox

Thank you! He did challenge me, and it was fun. He is such a smartie - and I mean that with respect.

The Words That Got to Me

which fly in from some wondrous magic place all ready to impart their heady thoughts, or not; I loved the contrast here between what we all dream of, and the reality that sadly strikes us at times!

I enjoyed the codeswitching to semi-German here. It gave the poem a complete air of originality. Good job.

thanks so much, Rachel!

The Words That Got to Me

“when I write, my writing guides the words” what a great start and the revere of what one would normally assume. “which fly in from some wondrous magic place all ready to impart their heady thoughts, or not;” I loved the way you set up a grand romantic idea, then pop it like a sad balloon with two simple words.

I really enjoyed the way you have taken the idea and written a true Ars Poetica, but without taking a darn thing seriously. You have used humour in your inimitable style to give us a genuine insight into your creative process, and the way you move from the idea of something wondrous and end in glorious cod-German was quite brilliant. It's good to know I am not the only one flying mostly by the seat of my pants.

thank you, Tim! If you are flying by the seat of your pants, you are inspired by the great literary geniuses! OR, perhaps you are one, yourself! and by the way, isn't seat of the pants flying, the most fun? Which is the reason I write.

Indeed it is, Katherine. I try to pretend I am a planner; before starting a book, I write reams of background information, character profiles, plot lines and location descriptions. Then I start to write, and by the end of paragraph one the story takes over, and it is now the one in charge of where it goes.

would you list the titles of your books?
