Ode to the Lost Sock

Ode to the Lost Sock

Oh, cruel and fickle fates of laundry day,
why dost thou steal what is rightfully mine?
A sock, a humble, faithful sock—
vanished into the void, never to return.

One moment, it danced in soapy delight,
whirling with giddy joy in the drum,
its cotton heart warm with the promise
of reunion with its twin—
a partnership, a pair, a destiny woven in thread!

And yet!—

Oh, the betrayal—
as I reach into the machine’s gaping maw,
only one emerges, cold and alone.

Where, pray tell, is the other?
Has it been summoned to some higher purpose?
Swept into a parallel dimension,
where single socks live free of their twin’s embrace?
Or does it linger, mocking me from the shadows,
clinging stubbornly to the inside of a trouser leg,
awaiting the perfect moment to reveal itself—
perhaps in public, mid-stride, mid-sentence,
so I might suffer yet another indignity?

I search, I plead, I overturn baskets,
delve into the abyss behind the radiator,
even interrogate the dog—
but the sock is gone, lost to the annals of domestic tragedy.

Farewell, dear friend.
May you find warmth, wherever you roam.

And as for your twin, left behind,
destined to be a dust rag or puppet…
well, I suppose I’ll just have to buy another pair.

And tempt once more the fickle fates

With another tantalizing pair.

The Words That Got to Me

I search, I plead, I overturn baskets, delve into the abyss behind the radiator, even interrogate the dog— had me laughing Or does it linger, mocking me from the shadows, clinging stubbornly to the inside of a trouser leg, awaiting the perfect moment to reveal itself— perhaps in public, mid-stride, mid-sentence, so I might suffer yet another indignity?

Tim, this is just too funny and cute, AND true! I loved looking behind the radiator. Do you have a radiator? Who hasn't been in the same predicament? (I guess those without a washer) The sock in the trouser leg, revealing itself in public is the best, just picturing it. Fun poem to start the day with. Thanks!

In the UK, the vast majority of houses use radiators, it allows each rooms temperature to be controlled, so no wasted heating of empty spaces. That aside... I am pleased to have given you a smile to start your day.

destined to be a dust rag or puppet… *OMG. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

This is my lament every Sunday. Oy. You've done such a hilarious job here!! I love it! You'll enjoy this: One Sunday, after her laundry day was completed, my mother said gleefully to my father and me at the dinner table, "Usually, I come up one sock short on Laundry Day...but this week, I have an EXTRA!!" That's how we knew the Ghost of Lost Socks had finally won the battle of Who Will Go Crazy First.

I love that story about your mother. It's like biros. I am convinced that down the back of the sofa is a secret wormhole to the planet Bic xxx

One moment, it danced in soapy delight, whirling with giddy joy in the drum, - hilarious! even interrogate the dog— yes, he is usually the culprit in our house!

I loved the way you've turned a mundane, irritating daily habit into a stunning elegy here. Hilarious yet profound. Wonderful work.

I love writing the ridiculous; it makes a nice mind break from writing the terror. I am pleased it managed to brighten your day.
