The lettuce exploded.
I don’t know how—
I just opened the fridge and there it was,
shredded like it had fled a crime scene.
The tomatoes had gone soft
from existential despair.
I tried to rescue them,
but they collapsed under questioning.
The cucumber was fine.
Too fine.
Smug, untrustworthy—
I don’t like vegetables that look like they know something.
Then the dressing spilled
down my leg,
like an accusation.
I considered abandoning the plan,
ordering pizza,
claiming the kitchen had been overtaken by hostile greens.
But no.
I pressed on.
I am brave.
I have tongs.
Later,
eating a bowl of something vaguely healthy,
I felt like a survivor.
Not of war—
but of fridge politics,
cutting board diplomacy,
and the quiet chaos
of trying to do the right thing
with rocket and romaine.
Fridge Politics

The Words That Got to Me
I am brave. I have tongs. Hilarious!
Oh my, I am so used to these fridge disasters! How do these veggies turn into something so unbearable? Usually, it's milk that spills for me: horrid. I loved the way you described the vegetables collapsing under questioning. Very funny indeed, Tim.

Thank you, Rachel. It was fun to write as my fridge is always in a state of argument with me.

The Words That Got to Me
The tomatoes had gone soft from existential despair. I tried to rescue them, but they collapsed under questioning. and all the rest!
Well, my goodness, Tim, you are also funny. That is just too cute. I won't say it's an everyday, normal occurrence, because I never heard of lettuce exploding, but be that as it may, your descriptions of the cucumber, etc are delightful and original. A fun post.
