My Inner Child

silliness

My Inner Child

One, two, three, one, two, three, three quarter time;

this poem took off in its own rhythmic style,

waltzing through verses which all seem to rhyme,

and one-two-threed right into my inner child.

Silly is something that little kids like;

stories and rhymes about tigers that sing,

orange and blue zebras, all piled on a bike,

and plastic flamingos, in yards, taking wing.

Writing for children was my chance to be

back in the mind of each shy little kid;

stories that helped their imaginings fly

and joyfully take off and soar like mine did.

But now, I have gone to the other extreme,

folks who are tired at the end of the day

want to relax, want to read, want to dream

and brush all the turmoil and worries away.

So, I write short stories, and poems, and I

hope they will lessen the stress and the strain,

but my inner child has snuck in on the sly,

and sometimes writes silliness I can’t restrain.

For, our world today, is pure chaos gone mad,

people not thinking, not using their brain,

so, I add some silly, but only a tad

or I would most probably wind up insane!

And so, here is something that I saw…somewhere

that gave me a chuckle, and I thought, how neat!

The cleverness of it, so simple, and there

it was, in its silliness! It was a treat!

A truck, loaded with thousands of copies of Roget’s Thesaurus crashed yesterday, losing the entire load. Witnesses were stunned, startled, aghast, taken aback, stupefied, confused, shocked, rattled, paralyzed …. and it goes on and on for three more lines. Loved it! 😊

The Words That Got to Me

"One, two, three, one, two, three, three quarter time;" such a great opening, you set the rhythm, and then the poem runs with it.

Katherine, I always love the way you let your inner child flow in your writing and here it comes out in spades. You begin with a waltz and dive straight into nonsense that is exactly the sort of ridiculous the child should be producing. Yet beneath it all, there is a hidden secret thread. Maybe we never really stop writing for the child inside, we just find a more grown up audience. And as for the thesaurus joke... I was amused, entertained, tickled, delighted, diverted, enthralled... Oh, you get the idea. 😊

Tim, you make me laugh. Thank you! Also for the lovely review. (still chuckling). You really are a funny man!

What a brilliant way to begin: ONE, two, three, ONE, two, three, three quarter time. Setting the beat like that made it IMPOSSIBLE to read this incorrectly! And you did a perfect job staying within that parameter, too! Adorable poem that ANY child (or musical grown-up!) would love and asked to have re-read again and again and again. And I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that in NO time, same child would be singing or reciting it fully on his or her own. I absolutely love this! What a GREAT start to my day!
