At the Heart of Contentment - Duet Poem

Contentment is a moth-wing goal.

If it were a taste, it would be warm fruit pie a la

mode.

Like others, I searched for years for this fragile

piece/peace.

If it were a sound, it would be the burbling belly-

laughs of a group of children.

However, I, too, fell short of achieving it.

If it were a sight, it would be two people in an

extended embrace.

The deluge of worldly sorrows suffocates this

elusive desire.

If it were a smell, it would be the head of a baby,

fresh from bathtime.

Therefore, if you are one of the blessed who knows tranquility, savor and extend it forward.

And if it were a color, it would be soft and inviting and

in the perfect shade for your skin tone.

Thank God for counselors, some family members,

devoted friends and his Holy Presence in my life.

If it were a final goal, it would be who to stand shoulder-to-

shoulder with forever.

I am grateful for all who helped me to move from the

dark, depressive shackles into this present space of

warm light.

If it were a hope, it would be world peace.

This is a space illuminating God’s grace and

forgiveness.

If it were a dream, it would be all the people who love

you, together, in one beautiful room, anticipating your

arrival.

I accept my shortcomings and all things I cannot

change.

And if it were a problem, it would be which new pair

of shoes would look best today.

Letting go and self-forgiving are critical milestones in

one’s search for peace.

If it were a promise, it would be the ability to handle

whatever life deals out.

Thank God, I finally have accepted both as my new

reality.

If it were a physical sensation to touch, it would be

sunshine radiating on a face.

I am finally content.

And if it were an inner sensation, it would be how it

feels every day to be friends with wonderful, thoughtful, generous you,

who is finally happy, at last.
