Sunlit River Thames

Boats weave amongst serene swans

Weeping willows wave

 

Noisy geese squabble

Flash of kingfisher turquoise

Startled fish dart deep

The Words That Got to Me

"Flash of kingfisher turquoise" Beautifully captures this fleeting moment.

Suggestions / Possible Tweaks

"Sunlit River Thames" almost feels like a caption or subtitle and could be stronger if it felt closer to the otherwise vivid imagery.

This use of paired haikus gives this poem great strength. Each has its own flavour, yet both are unmistakably part of the whole. The first is almost cinematic, giving us a broad view of the calm scene and then the second zooms in on the action lying behind this serenity; the sights so often missed by the casual observer.

I judge the success of a haiku by whether or not it evokes a feeling of "peace" so deep inside of me that I emit a sigh. For this beautiful pair of haiku, I signed not once, but twice.
